Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence to Host Virtual Workshop on AM Technology Adoption

The ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) has announced a virtual workshop on accelerating additive manufacturing (AM) technology adoption through standardization and certification, April 22.

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., April 14, 2020 — The ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) has announced a virtual workshop on accelerating additive manufacturing (AM) technology adoption through standardization and certification, April 22. The workshop is presented in partnership with TÜV SÜD, a German testing and certification organization.


As additive manufacturing matures as part of mainstream manufacturing, standardization and certification continue to be key in advancing the use of AM technologies. These technologies continue to advance rapidly and gaps exist in meeting many industry-specific needs.

"In regulated industries such as aerospace, medical, and automotive, certification is essential to gain market access," according to Dr. Khalid Rafi, ASTM International's senior lead for additive manufacturing program development. "Certification scheme development is quickly advancing but it depends on specific standards to cover the entire value chain. Therefore, globally accepted market-relevant standards are required to meet the growing demand in the application of AM technology."

This workshop is intended to provide an understanding of the following topics:
• Bridging the gap between standards and certification,
• AM certification approaches: meeting requirements for delivering AM parts to regulated industries, and
• In particular, standardization in AM proceses, including:
o Multi-laser technology,
o In-situ process monitoring and control,
o Process workflow,
o Digital workflow,
o Materials, and
o Polymer specific processes

Featuring technical talks and panel discussions, the workshop is open to all AM professionals interested in exploring and understanding the standardization and certification process as well as those looking to implement best practices into their additive manufacturing activities.

Late last year, ASTM International and TÜV SÜD signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop other types of advanced educational certificate offerings in AM tailored to specific roles for various industry sectors.
