Airwolf 3D Announces Issuance of US Patent for Revolutionary Water Soluble Support Filament

This patent covers the company’s innovative technology that enables 3D printers to produce complex parts and models with soluble supports, greatly accelerating the prototyping process while eliminating the need for manual post-processing.

Las Vegas, NV (September 21, 2022) In a move that solidifies its standing as the industry leader in 3D printing filaments, Airwolf 3D today announced the issuance of US Patent No. 11,446,877 for its revolutionary water soluble support filament. This patent covers the company's innovative technology that enables 3D printers to produce complex parts and models with soluble supports, greatly accelerating the prototyping process while eliminating the need for manual post-processing.

Support Material Dissolves In Water

The patent is assigned to Wolf and Associates Inc. and part of an intellectual property portfolio held by Wolf and Associates Inc. that includes several issued patents, trademarks, and numerous patent applications relating to HD, Axiom, and EVO 3D printers, Wolfbite bed adhesives and now Hydrofill soluble support, to which Airwolf 3D has exclusive rights in the US and major international markets.

HydroFill water-soluble support is comprised of a mixture of polymeric materials that can be printed using a 3D printer to form a support scaffold for overhanging parts of an object to be printed. The 3D object can be printed such that at least a portion of the 3D object is printed onto the support scaffold. After printing, the support scaffold can be removed from the 3D object by treatment with water, such as by immersion in water. The compositions can comprise a mixture of one or more water-soluble polymers and one or more water insoluble polymers.

HydroFill TPU Print
Before and after: HydroFill provides support for a wider range of materials, making it easy to 3D print parts with steep angles and overhangs.
"This is a huge win for Airwolf 3D and our customers," said Erick Wolf, co-founder and CEO of Airwolf 3D. "Our water soluble support filament has completely changed the game when it comes to 3D printing, and we're thrilled that the US Patent Office has recognized the novelty and utility of our invention."

Washable Support Filament for 3D printing
Impossible to print without supports, the puzzle cube with and without HydroFill support material.
Airwolf 3D has been manufacturing industrial additive manufacturing printers and filaments in the United States since its inception in 2012.

T.J. Davies' Retention Knobs

Our retention knobs are manufactured above international standards or to machine builder specifications. Retention knobs are manufactured utilizing AMS-6274/AISI-8620 alloy steel drawn in the United States. Threads are single-pointed on our lathes while manufacturing all other retention knob features to ensure high concentricity. Our process ensures that our threads are balanced (lead in/lead out at 180 degrees.) Each retention knob is carburized (hardened) to 58-62HRC, and case depth is .020-.030. Core hardness 40HRC. Each retention knob is coated utilizing a hot black oxide coating to military specifications. Our retention knobs are 100% covered in black oxide to prevent rust. All retention knob surfaces (not just mating surfaces) have a precision finish of 32 RMA micro or better: ISO grade 6N. Each retention knob is magnetic particle tested and tested at 2.5 times the pulling force of the drawbar. Certifications are maintained for each step in the manufacturing process for traceability.
