Industrial Internet Consortium AI-based Test Drive Optimizes Smart Mold Injection Processes

Test drive improves productivity, reduces downtime

The Industrial Internet Consortium® (IIC™) today announced the Smart Mold Injection Process Optimization and AI Test Drive. The test drive improves the profitability of manufacturing injection plants using artificial intelligence (AI) to enable efficient operation, minimize loss, and reduce waste.

"Small- and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises need to supply good quality products at low prices to remain competitive. They must upgrade existing core competencies using digitalization and intelligent technologies and develop a customer service model," said Hail Jung, Co-Founder, InterX and IIC member lead on the test drive. "The Smart Mold Injection Process Optimization AI Test Drive has shown how companies can increase productivity by 10 percent and reduce downtime by 80 percent and quality loss by 9.6 percent."

A smart mold comprises intelligent process monitoring and control, automation technology, equipment networking, and more. The Smart Mold Injection Process Optimization and AI Test Drive optimizes injection recipe operation by applying a smart mold to the injection process based on AI technologies. The optimized injection process can solve on-site problems quickly, increase productivity, and reduce defects and production costs.

"The project with InterX enabled us to demonstrate new competitive advantages by creating a smart mold using IoT and AI," said Gyu Nam Choi, CEO of Hankuk Mold and Test Drive participant. "We were able to provide a service that optimizes production conditions and minimizes defectives − the biggest requirements of customers who use the actual mold. We plan to apply smart mold technology, continuous digitalization, and intelligent technologies to new projects for a competitive edge and to continue working with manufacturing AI and data analysis companies such as InterX."

IIC Test Drives are short-term, rapid-engagement pilots for technology users to employ and adopt Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies. The IIC Test Drive program fosters collaboration with partners to address leading-edge IIoT use cases in 3-6-month projects based upon technology end users' real problems. More information on the Smart Mold Injection Process Optimization and AI Test Drive can be found here on the IIC website.
