GE Additive selected by GA-ASI to accelerate metal additive growth

GE Additive’s proven track record in driving industrialization and additive adoption in the aerospace and defense industry a key factor in selection

Cincinnati, OH - 22 March 2019 - GE Additive announced today that it has been selected to provide its AddWorksTM consultancy services to General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) - a leading manufacturer of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) systems, radars, electro-optic and related mission systems. Following a competitive tender, AddWorks will work closely with GA-ASI to accelerate and strengthen the qualification and implementation of metal additive within its products and processes.

GE Additive AddWorks is a global team of over 200 engineering and manufacturing specialists which helps organizations shorten the learning curve for introducing additive manufacturing into their business - advising on industrialization, part certification processes, materials characterization and production readiness strategies.

"This is a great fit for us, because GE has already been through a similar journey. We get where GA-ASI is at and where it wants to go. By offering our learnings and in-depth knowledge of the aerospace and defense industry, we will be able to assist them in leveraging metal additive with our methodical, systematic approach, that meets the exacting requirements of the sector and their aggressive goal to grow the impact of additive within their application space," said Jason Oliver, President & CEO, GE Additive.

"Some of our AddWorks consultants are responsible for designing and then industrializing many of the additively manufactured aerospace parts that are in service today. So, they are very well-placed to accompany GA-ASI in accelerating their additive journey. We're honored to secure this engagement and look forward to helping them drive successful outcomes and their competitive advantage," he added.

Using AI to Collect & Leverage Data

Data is the foundation of Industry 4.0. While skilled workers will always be essential, data is reshaping the manufacturing landscape, enabling automation of repetitive tasks, empowering smarter decision-making with AI assistance, and reducing defects and downtime. This shift allows small and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) to compete more effectively on quality, speed, and cost. While AI and machine learning systems typically require around two years to collect enough data to reach their full potential, manufacturers can start seeing benefits almost immediately with basic analysis tools and dashboards. Our MEP National NetworkTM expert explains how in this Manufacturing Tomorrow article.
