June 25, 2025 - PORTO, Portugal - Critical Manufacturing successfully concluded the MES & Industry 4.0 International Summit at Porto's Alfândega Congress Center, bringing together over 600 registered guests from 36 countries across 15 industry sectors. Over two packed days, attendees explored the future of manufacturing, sharing experiences, discussing challenges, and connecting over the realities of digital transformation.

The summit delivered a robust program of expert talks, technology sessions, product demos, roundtables, and an interactive workshop. More than 50 speakers offered perspectives on topics ranging from scaling MES globally, enabling compliance in highly regulated industries, and AI's growing role in manufacturing operations. A key theme that emerged from the discussions was the industry's shift beyond the concept of a "smart factory" toward the vision of a thinking factory, where AI driven software systems help operations reason, adapt, and optimize in real time.

The keynote sessions delivered perspectives on manufacturing's digital future. Walker Reynolds, President and Solutions Architect at 4.0 Solutions, opened the event with a compelling keynote on how unified data strategies and modern architectures can help manufacturers transition from fragmented systems to cohesive, scalable operations.

"If you don't understand digital transformation, you can't unlock the potential of AI agents." Reynolds also stated that, "99% of digital transformation initiatives start in the MES layer", emphasizing the critical role of MES in creating practical, human-centered solutions that drive meaningful change.

On day 2, Dr. Thomas Kaufmann, Executive Vice President & COO of Infineon's Automotive Division, shared insights on building resilient supply chains and advancing software defined manufacturing, offering a clear view of how digitalization is driving transformation in the automotive industry.

Highlighting the importance of collaboration, Dr. Kaufmann said, "Building bridges across partners and the industry is key, and I think it is very much in your Porto DNA because you are the masters of building bridges. [...] You bring together here digitalization, Industry 4.0 and MES enthusiasts. Some of the people I see in the room, I would call them MES veterans."

Reflecting on the summit's impact, Francisco Almada Lobo, CEO and Co-founder of Critical Manufacturing, said, "What made this year's MESI 4.0 Summit so special was the openness of the conversations. We heard honest accounts of what's working, what isn't, and where manufacturers see both opportunity and challenge. The feedback from attendees has been fantastic, and everyone present valued the depth of discussion and the chance to learn from peers who are facing similar issues. Events like MESI 4.0 Summit help move the conversation from vision to real action, showing that while technologies like AI are advancing rapidly, true progress happens when people, processes, and systems come together in harmony."

The summit also celebrated collaboration across the ecosystem with the Partner Awards, recognizing the vital role partners play in helping manufacturers achieve their digital transformation goals.

Over the course of two days, attendees and speakers repeatedly emphasized the critical role of MES as the backbone of smart manufacturing, enabling clean data flow, real-time analytics, and seamless system integration. Discussions also explored the emerging convergence of AI, MES, and cloud platforms to support intelligent, flexible, and resilient operations. Several sessions highlighted practical AI applications, including adaptive scheduling, predictive maintenance, and cross-site optimization.

"MESI 4.0 Summit provided a unique space for meaningful exchange. The depth of discussion and the focus on real world challenges made this event stand out. We are leaving inspired and equipped with ideas we can act on." — said Hugo Rego, Senior Manager of Global EDGE Solutions Architecture, Red Hat. "The summit also highlighted how partnerships are key to translating technology into practical solutions. It was a great opportunity to share, learn, and collaborate."

Sponsors including Red Hat, RoviSys, Athena Technology Solutions, L&T Technology Services, Tata Consultancy Services, HCLTech, Regenesia, FrontWell Solutions, and SCAL were instrumental in supporting the event, not only through their sponsorships but also by sharing expertise, showcasing solutions, and engaging with attendees.

Looking ahead
The next MESI 4.0 Summit is already on the horizon, with May 20-21, 2027 announced as the official dates for the 3rd edition. As the journey toward smarter, more adaptive manufacturing continues, MESI will remain at the heart of that conversation.
