HEIDENHAIN

Many of today's disruptive technologies wouldn't be possible without a keen focus on precision. But in fast-paced corporate environments, the bottom line sometimes trumps superior engineering. At HEIDENHAIN, we're in a unique position to put R&D before net profit: In 1970, company founder Dr. Johannes Heidenhain placed his shares of the company into a foundation, enabling HEIDENHAIN to invest extensively in exciting new technologies. The result? Game-changing innovations that help our customers and their end-users gain an edge in competitive, ever-changing industries.

A Rare American Builder of Large Machine Tools With ‘Strong Bones’ Adds a Superior Control to Bring New Benefits to Many

With the need for high quality contour surface milling on the rise in manufacturing, one of the rare large machine tool builders based in the U.S. has now met that challenge and is making an impact in those industries that need it most.

When to Retrofit a Machine and How to Choose the Right Control

With just about any CNC control, you can be certain you’ll be able to take code from a CAD CAM system and start machining with the push of just a few buttons. But what makes one control better than another?

How Machine Tool Feedback Can Reveal or Hide Axis Errors

Solutions for avoiding thermally induced dimensional deviations of workpieces have become more crucial than ever for the machine tool building industry. Thermal drift is primarily caused by feed axes on the basis of recirculating ball screws.

Smart Manufacturing Control

This article discusses new technology features within the CNC, the HMI (Human Machine Interface) and making the process easier to manage, as well as how that relates to the machine motion control and specifically for multi-axis applications.

Discussing ATX West with HEIDENHAIN

Motion control is at the core of automation technology. Whether it is 3D printing, robotics, semiconductor manufacturing or machine tools, HEIDENHAIN offers the precision feedback in both linear and angular, as well as positioning systems and controls. Booth #4466

The 6 Latest Trends in Direct Drive Motor Technology

Despite the maturity of the machine tool industry, allowing for many advancements in engineering design over the span of decades, a machine is still limited by what the builder is able to implement.

Positioning Accuracy on the Gripper of a Robot Arm

For the grinding machine producer Strausak, the robot manufacturer Stäubli and the encoder supplier HEIDENHAIN, the insertion of cylindrical tools into tool holders with a robot arm was a real challenge—and therefore a task made to measure.

Talking IMTS with Heidenhain

Booth #135226 - Connected Machining products – – In order to truly showcase the new age of digital manufacturing, we will use our control systems during the show to connect equipment from many machine tool builders throughout the massive exhibition back to our booth.

Industrial Robots: Encoders for Tool Center Point Accuracy

The use of secondary encoders on all of a robots axes, as well as the use of linear encoders for positioning the robot relative to the workpiece, enables a high level of accuracy at the tool center point

Why Direct Drive?

To understand these benefits, we start with the basic concept of direct drive whereby the force of a motor is directly applied to a mechanism without any intermediate drive train such as a gearbox or toothed belt etc. The core working principles of direct drive motor technology is in essence based on the right hand rule of electromagnetism, whereby a current moving through a wound coil creates a magnetic field.
