Siemens deploys industry-leading sustainability initiatives across its US manufacturing footprint

• One of nation’s first all-electric paint lines for the electrical distribution industry installed at Grand Prairie, Texas manufacturing plant reduces gas consumption by 90 percent • Siemens production facilities and buildings to achieve net zero carbon footprint by 2030

September 18, 2024—Siemens, the company deploying technology across industry and infrastructure to scale sustainable impact, has implemented several sustainability initiatives across its U.S. manufacturing facilities to cut emissions, go electric and transition to a green domestic supply chain.

A leader in the electrical distribution industry, Siemens' Grand Prairie, Texas Electrical Products facility has introduced an all-electric powder coating paint line. Paint lines such as these require a significant amount of natural gas in traditional manufacturing facilities and was a critical lever to address to decarbonize the facility. The new paint process reduces the facility's gas consumption by up to 90 percent and was implemented without disturbing service to the facility. In addition to the line operations, other aspects of the process such as powder chemistry, heat reuse and material characteristics are being trialed for improved efficiency. Looking ahead, by 2030, all-electric powder coat paint lines will become the new standard for other Siemens facilities in the U.S., both new and existing.

In Sacramento, California Siemens Mobility headquarters is utilizing photovoltaic panels to harness solar energy. Sitting on more than 60 acres of land, the energy produced by the facility's 2.1 MW solar array powers up to 75 percent of the rail manufacturing hub. Additionally, Siemens' new greenfield facility in Pomona, California will also run a fourth of its operations via solar power once fully operational in 2025.

"As the first global industrial company to announce its goal to become carbon neutral by 2030, Siemens has long prioritized sustainability. Now we are proving we have the technology to tackle the toughest industrial challenges," said Siemens USA CEO Barbara Humpton. "American manufacturing is responsible for 12 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, so I am proud to see the breadth of sustainability initiatives that we are employing at our own facilities here in the U.S. As our physical manufacturing footprint continues to grow, we are already witnessing the positive impact our efforts are having."

Reuse & Recycle
Reuse and recycling of materials is key to a circular economy. The team at the company's Spartanburg, South Carolina Electrical Products manufacturing plant is extracting oil from plant floor materials and metals from waste for reuse. Additionally, the company's plants in Grand Prairie, Texas and Hingham, Massachusetts are landfill-free sites - producing electricity via thermal energy from incinerated waste.

Efficiency Upgrades
One of the most basic, yet crucial levers to pull in a sustainability roadmap is efficiency upgrades. From LED lighting retrofits in Siemens' Broken Arrow, Oklahoma plant to replacing older HVAC systems and aging compressors with more efficient ones throughout various Siemens facilities - this simple task has saved Siemens more than 11,000 MWh of energy over the last three years. Abating 8,200 tons of CO2 since 2021, these energy efficiency improvements are especially important as more than a third of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are produced from buildings.

Inspecting different parts of the building itself, Siemens' Fort Worth, Texas, facility is installing Luxwall windows. The Breakthrough Energy-backed company provides a high-performance window solution that reduces energy consumption by using a vacuum insulated glass. The alternative to traditional glass can reduce energy usage by up to 45 percent and is also being explored as a retrofit option for other existing Siemens facilities for greater efficiency.

Siemens has employed a variety of robust initiatives as it powers ahead towards its own climate goals. A company that has been in the U.S. for more than 160 years, Siemens continues to provide sustainable technology, consultation and services for its customers, while leading the charge for sustainable manufacturing.

T.J. Davies' Retention Knobs

T.J. Davies' Retention Knobs

Our retention knobs are manufactured above international standards or to machine builder specifications. Retention knobs are manufactured utilizing AMS-6274/AISI-8620 alloy steel drawn in the United States. Threads are single-pointed on our lathes while manufacturing all other retention knob features to ensure high concentricity. Our process ensures that our threads are balanced (lead in/lead out at 180 degrees.) Each retention knob is carburized (hardened) to 58-62HRC, and case depth is .020-.030. Core hardness 40HRC. Each retention knob is coated utilizing a hot black oxide coating to military specifications. Our retention knobs are 100% covered in black oxide to prevent rust. All retention knob surfaces (not just mating surfaces) have a precision finish of 32 RMA micro or better: ISO grade 6N. Each retention knob is magnetic particle tested and tested at 2.5 times the pulling force of the drawbar. Certifications are maintained for each step in the manufacturing process for traceability.
