America Makes Membership Community Elects GM's Susan Smyth to Executive Committee

Special Election Held to Fill Vacancy

Youngstown, Ohio — March 6, 2018. America Makes proudly announces the election of Susan Smyth, Ph.D., FSME, Chief Scientist for General Motors (GM) Manufacturing Director, Manufacturing Systems Research, GM R&D, to its Executive Committee. The America Makes Executive Committee serves as the main strategic advisory committee for America Makes with a focus on strategy, policy, and advocacy. Elected members to the Executive Committee include individuals of sufficient stature and understanding of the additive manufacturing industry and who are committed to the vision and mission of America Makes.


A special election of the Executive Committee was held in February to fill the vacancy recently left by the departure of Teresa Clement, Ph.D., Strategic Technology Directorate - Technology Planning, Raytheon, who stepped down due to her increased responsibilities at Raytheon. Dr. Smyth will hold the position for a term of one year wherein the regular election schedule for the Executive Committee will resume.

"While we celebrate Susans election, I would be incredibly remiss if I didnt also recognize Teresa for her dedicated service and numerous contributions throughout the last five years to the Executive Committee and America Makes. Besides being an Executive Committee member, Teresa also served as Chairperson and Secretary. On behalf of all of us at America Makes, we wish Teresa all the best in this exciting next chapter for her at Raytheon."

In her current position at GM, Dr. Smyth is recognized as one of the strategic technology leaders both inside and outside the organization and is responsible for manufacturing technology research and development, enabling the production of world class vehicle and propulsion systems and driving innovations to enhance quality, efficiency, and flexibility of GMs manufacturing systems.

She is also the GM Executive Representative and Chair of the Manufacturing Technology Leadership Council at the United States Council for Automotive Research.

Since 2012, Dr. Smyth has been serving as a board director of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), a non-profit organization which has been supporting the manufacturing industry for the last 85 years, promoting manufacturing technology and developing education programs for workforce development. This year, Dr. Smyth is also serving as the boards Vice President.

In addition, Dr. Smyth has served as Chair of the U.S. Manufacturing Council, which advises the Secretary of Commerce on government policies and programs that affect United States manufacturing.
