SIEMENS, HP AND LIGHT GUIDE SYSTEMS REVEAL ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TECH AT UI LABS

Collaboration between three companies demonstrated revolutionary new processes and technologies that can change the way products are manufactured

WIXOM, Mich., Dec. 1, 2017-Key innovators from Siemens, HP Inc., and Light Guide Systems recently joined forces to display advanced manufacturing systems at the "Digital Disruption: The Future Factory Transformation" event at UI Labs Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII). The interactive display leveraged augmented reality (AR) work instructions to help deliver higher quality, productivity, and training effectiveness on every station of an assembly line.

"Todays technologies are having a dramatic impact on traditional manufacturing processes," said Paul Ryznar, founder, CEO and president of OPS Solutions. "By utilizing powerful AR tech in new ways and in concert with advanced data collection and analysis tools, we are creating technology that could revolutionize the industry with unprecedented levels of quality, efficiency and error proofing, along with training and inspection for products ranging from pacemakers and powertrains to pizzas."

The key collaboration featured technology from three companies combined in a single assembly line to create a Stanley Black & Decker power drill. Light Guide Systems, an AR tech tool, helped to streamline processes and guide operators through assembly and inspection utilizing projectors and the Sprout Pro by HP, an immersive, all-in-one computing platform. Detailed data was collected and analyzed by the Siemens Simatic IT Manufacturing Execution System—helping to create an efficient operation that is not only precise and powerful, but available today.

"HP has built a unique projective computing and 3D scanning desktop, the Sprout Pro by HP, which creates the basis on which to build pioneering assembly solutions from Light Guide Systems and Siemens," said Louis Kim, General Manager of HP Inc's Immersive Computer Group.

The demonstration was part of a DMDII workshop showcasing the "Future Factory" platform to demonstrate key applications of digital manufacturing. The workshop introduced digital tools for the manufacturing environment by showcasing companies and use cases across the production cycle to provide digital technology experiences that will be applicable to any number of industries and companies.

"Technologies like Light Guide Systems and the HP Sprout are significant enablers of manufacturers digital enterprises, and by connecting those to Siemens holistic solutions like SIMATIC IT - our manufacturing execution system - were able to better enable the digital thread across the entire value chain," said Davide Picciotto, a Digital Enterprise expert from Siemens PLM Software.

Light Guide Systems Classic reduces errors and radically improves manufacturing and assembly processes by projecting a digital operating "canvas" directly onto a work surface and providing audio and visual prompts, guidance, pacing and direction. Light Guide Systems Pro incorporates its proprietary software into the powerful yet compact Sprout Pro by HP PC platform. The Siemens Simatic IT Manufacturing Execution System enables component integration to help produce maximum quality and production optimizations across assembly and manufacturing operations.
