A 60-year-old precision shop in Duncan, Oklahoma, focusing on DOD and aerospace, uses real-time production data to replace the handshake as the new proof of trust.
How Southern Machine Works Turned Production Data Into Its Best Sales Tool
Case Study from | Datanomix
A handshake used to be enough. A buyer walked the floor, watched the machines run, and shook hands with the owner before signing offon the job. That worked when customers showed up in person. It stopped working the moment they didn't.
More buyers now vet suppliers from a screen, not a walk through the shop floor. They still need assurance that a part is running correctly, priced fairly, and on schedule. And real-time production data is what allows a virtual sales call to close the deal. For shops chasing defense and aerospace work, the stakes are even higher: tolerances measured in tens of microns, background checks, ITAR registration, CMMC compliance. Buyers in this market don't want promises and a round of golf. They want proof.
A 60-Year Shop Built for the Next 60
Southern Machine Works has run out of Duncan, Oklahoma for more than six decades. Today that's over 30 machines, 35 employees, and 25,000 square feet turning out tight-tolerance work for DOD and aerospace customers, the kind of jobs with zero room for guesswork.
President and CEO Frank Burch came up through accounting, and it shows in how he runs the business. For years, Southern Machine Works thrived on a major customer down the street and a reputation built over decades. When COVID reshaped how buyers vetted suppliers, Burch saw the shift early and moved on it: if customers could no longer walk his floor to see the shop running well, he'd find a way to show them anyway, without anyone setting foot on site. That instinct is exactly what built the system Southern Machine Works runs on today.
Connecting the Quote to the Floor
Burch built that proof by wiring his quoting and ERP systems into Datanomix Production Monitoring. His ERP sets the expected time and margin on a job. Datanomix tracks what actually happens on the machine. The two connected uncovers ERP Insights, and Burch can put the estimate next to the reality, every time, no manual digging required.
That comparison cuts two ways. Inside the shop, it tells Burch exactly where a quote missed and where a process needs work, the same connected visibility that helped standardize performance across identical machines in an earlier chapter of the shop's data story. Outside the shop, it's the proof Burch puts in front of customers, in person or on a call, that he's running lean and charging a fair rate.
"Datanomix is there as the backbone to say, okay, it's actually taken us this long to make it," Burch said. "Can we get better, or do we need to reevaluate our quoting structure?"
Compliance as a Competitive Edge
Southern Machine Works is ITAR registered. Being CMMC compliant isn't optional in this market; it's the price of admission. That means controlled programs, locked-down customer data, and real site security. No shortcuts.
Meeting that bar takes the right discipline. The right G-code has to land on the right machine every time, with a full approval trail behind it. Datanomix G-Code Cloud + DNC delivers exactly that. It's GovCloud-native, built for CMMC 2.0, and backed by full traceability from file to machine. For any shop chasing DOD and aerospace work under the same requirements, G-Code Cloud is part of a strong CMMC plan.
A Shop Culture Built Around Training, Not Just Tooling
Burch treats workforce development the same way he treats equipment: as an investment. He's been an NTMA member for roughly 20 years and ran the beta version of NTMA-U, the association's three-year journeyman machinist program. One of his own guys was among its first graduates and Southern Machine Works even supplied shop floor footage to be used in the program's refresh.
That matters more in a rural community like Duncan, where the apprenticeship pipelines common in the Midwest don't exist. NTMA-U gives Burch a way to hire for aptitude, not just experience, and to train the machinist skill set.
Measurable Gains on the Floor
The data backs it up. In a recent evaluation window, utilization climbed 16 percent, capacity rose 35 percent, and uptime improved 34 percent.
Scaled per machine, that's roughly 380 recovered hours and $30,435 in added productivity value a year, at an assumed $80 shop rate, a 13x return on the investment.
Numbers like that make the case internally. What actually convinces a customer is more specific: proof a part is running true, in-process checks showing quality holds up job after job, and a quote that isn't padded with costs they can't see.
"The customers feel very comfortable that I'm doing what I can to make sure that I'm efficient and effective, and I don't have a bunch of fat," Burch said. "They can look at it, and I can show it to them, and they say, yep, he's not charging me too much, he's being reasonable."
The handshake still matters to Burch. He still plays golf, still takes customers to dinner. But the thing that gets him in the door now, and keeps him there, is the data that backs up everything he says across the table.
